What is Coaching The Mature Driver 2?

Coaching the Mature Driver 2 is a classroom defensive driving course built specifically for drivers aged 60 and above. It uses a proven discussion and participation-based coaching methodology to address the unique challenges that come with driving as the aging process affects vision, reaction time, and physical flexibility.

The course covers all key defensive driving concepts including pre-trip inspection, SCC (Scanning, Cushion of Safety, Communicating), backing, and driving in adverse weather, along with practical techniques designed to help mature drivers adapt their habits and stay safe behind the wheel.

Video presentations feature driver point-of-view footage and real traffic situations that reflect the environments mature drivers navigate every day.

Why Use Coaching The Mature Driver 2?

Coaching the Mature Driver 2 is designed to reduce collisions, support insurance reduction, and help organizations manage risk and protect against liability when working with mature driver populations.

It addresses the safety challenges specific to drivers over 60 in a respectful, practical way that builds confidence rather than discouraging continued driving.
Built for ease of implementation, the program gives organizations everything needed to run the course in-house without third-party trainers.

How Does Coaching The Mature Driver 2 Work?

Instructors use a fully scripted Instructor’s Guide to lead step-by-step classroom presentations that combine video, follow-up questions, traffic diagram analysis, and group discussion. Training takes approximately 4 hours to complete.

Each instructor requires an Instructor’s Kit to deliver the course and each student receives a Response Book used for written exercises and situation analysis for group discussion. Drivers who complete the course receive a course completion certificate.

What Coaching The Mature Driver 2 Covers

Pre-Trip Inspection

The systematic checks every driver should complete before the vehicle moves, with particular attention to the adjustments and awareness habits that become more important as physical flexibility and reaction time change with age.

SCC: Scanning, Cushion of Safety and Communicating

The three defensive driving fundamentals that apply to every trip. For mature drivers this module focuses on rebuilding and reinforcing the systematic scanning and spacing habits that compensate for changes in peripheral vision and reaction time.

Backing and Low-Speed Maneuvering

One of the highest-risk maneuvers for mature drivers. Covers mirror use, spatial awareness, spotter protocols, and the compensating techniques that make backing safer as depth perception and neck mobility change over time.

Adverse Weather and Special Conditions

How to adjust speed, following distance, and decision-making in rain, snow, ice, and low-visibility conditions, where the physical demands on the driver are highest and the margin for error is smallest.

Offsetting the Effects of Aging on Driver Performance

Practical techniques and habit adjustments that help mature drivers compensate for changes in vision, reaction time, flexibility, and cognitive processing, so they can continue driving safely and confidently for as long as possible.

Traffic Diagram Analysis and Real Situation Review

Real traffic situations analyzed in group discussion, covering what went wrong, what the right decision looked like, and how scenario-based learning reinforces the habits and awareness that prevent incidents before they happen.
