What is CEVO 4 Fire – Online?

CEVO 4 Fire Online is a self-paced online Emergency Vehicle Operator Course built exclusively for fire apparatus operators, delivering the proven CEVO curriculum in a fully online format that operators can complete on their own schedule without disrupting operations.

The course covers all key defensive driving concepts including vehicle inspection and characteristics, SCC (Scanning, Cushion of Safety, Communicating), emergency and non-emergency driving across a range of environments, backing, adverse weather, and maneuvering skills including cone course exercises and on-the-road observations.

Video presentations feature operator point-of-view footage and real traffic situations throughout.

Why Use CEVO 4 Fire – Online?

CEVO 4 Fire Online is designed to reduce collisions, support risk management, and help organizations protect against liability. It serves as both an onboarding program for new hires and a structured refresher for experienced operators, keeping your entire fleet trained to a consistent, documented standard.

The course complements and works well with NFPA standards and has been used to train over one million fire apparatus operators worldwide since 1998.

How Does CEVO 4 Fire – Online Work?

Individuals or organizations purchase authorization keys to access the course, with access instructions sent to the email address entered at checkout upon purchase. The training takes approximately 2 hours to complete and a downloadable certificate of completion is generated upon passing the final test.

For large organizations with an existing Learning Management System, the course can be hosted directly on your LMS, and keys can be purchased in bulk and assigned as needed to scale training across an entire department without scheduling coordination or instructor dependency.

What CEVO 4 Fire Covers

Vehicle Inspection and Characteristics

The systematic pre-operation checks every operator must complete before the apparatus moves, covering what to look for, what to document, and how fire apparatus handle differently from standard vehicles in ways that affect every driving decision.

SCC: Scanning, Cushion of Safety and Communicating

The three defensive driving fundamentals that apply to every trip and every level of response. Builds the systematic habits that give operators the time and space to make safe decisions under pressure.

Emergency Driving and Due Regard

How to operate safely under lights and sirens, covering activation criteria, intersection clearing, speed management, and the legal and operational expectations that come with emergency response.

Non-Emergency Driving

The incidents that happen when no one is rushing. Covers the habits and awareness gaps that lead to incidents during routine, non-emergency operation, often the most overlooked risk in fire fleet safety programs.

Backing and Low-Speed Maneuvering

A leading cause of apparatus damage and near-miss events. Covers spotter protocols, spatial awareness, and the maneuvering skills including cone course exercises and on-the-road observations that build the muscle memory to prevent them.

Adverse Weather and Special Conditions

How to adjust speed, following distance, and decision-making in rain, snow, ice, and low-visibility conditions, where standard driving habits become dangerous for a vehicle the size and weight of fire apparatus.

Intersection Safety

The highest-risk moment in any emergency response. Operators learn systematic clearing techniques, right-of-way management, and how lights and sirens create a dangerous false sense of priority that leads to the most preventable crashes.
