What is CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition?

CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition is a complete Emergency Vehicle Operator program for fire apparatus operators, combining classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training in a single course. It is on the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal’s list of Approved Emergency Vehicle Driver Programs, giving departments nationwide a state-reviewed curriculum.

It builds on the original CEVO 4 Fire curriculum, expanding the classroom portion to a full 8 hours. Combined with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, it’s a complete 16-hour program.

The extended classroom curriculum adds a dedicated session on fire apparatus operators and the law, covering due regard and state emergency vehicle statutes. It expands coverage of route planning, seat belt and restraint use, and more.

Real court case analysis shows operators the real-world consequences of the decisions they make behind the wheel, with NFPA codes and standards referenced where applicable.

The video-based classroom instruction includes operator point-of-view traffic scenarios and emergency vehicle dashcam footage, available on USB or streaming.

Why Use CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition?

CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition is our most comprehensive fire apparatus operator course. It expands the CEVO 4 Fire classroom instruction from 4–6 hours to a full 8 hours, with added sessions on the law, distracted driving, roadway incident scene safety, and deeper coverage of emergency response.

Combined with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel skills evaluation aligned with NFPA driver/operator standards, it’s a complete 16-hour program.

It gives departments one standard of training for every operator, new or experienced. A course completion certificate and built-in recording forms document each operator’s training, from the classroom to behind the wheel, helping departments reduce collisions, support risk management, and reduce liability exposure.

More than 30 years. Over 1 million emergency vehicle operators trained worldwide. CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition carries that track record forward.

How Does CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition Work?

Instructors use a fully scripted Instructor’s Guide to lead step-by-step class sessions that combine video, follow-up questions, traffic diagrams, court case analysis, and group discussion.

Eight hours of classroom instruction are followed by 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, including maneuvering exercises and on-the-road observation, all documented with built-in recording forms.

Each instructor needs an Instructor’s Kit to deliver the course, and each operator needs their own Response Book. Operators write out their answers to session questions and traffic scenarios.

Putting answers on paper helps them think through each situation before the group discussion, and helps them remember it long after class.

The final exam is taken online through our proprietary learning management system. Operators who score 80% or higher receive a course completion certificate.

What CEVO 4 Fire Extended Edition Covers

Fire Apparatus Operators & the Law (New)

What every operator needs to know before they get behind the wheel. Covers due regard, state emergency vehicle statutes, and the best practices that keep operators compliant and departments protected.

Basic Operation & Characteristics (Expanded)

Builds on apparatus inspection and vehicle dynamics with expanded instruction on route planning and NFPA emergency response procedures, plus a close look at seat belt and restraint policy – habits that protect operators and crews on every run.

SCC: Scanning, Cushion of Safety & Communicating

The three defensive driving fundamentals that apply to every trip, every environment, and every level of emergency. Builds the systematic habits that prevent the most common crash scenarios before they develop.

Emergency Response (Expanded)

A deeper look at operating under lights and sirens, covering the real risks of emergency driving, navigating controlled intersections, and managing emotions during a high-stress call, reinforced with a real court case analysis showing how these decisions play out in practice.

Non-Emergency Driving

The crashes that happen when no one is rushing. Covers the habits and awareness gaps that lead to incidents during routine, non-emergency operation — often the most overlooked risk in fleet safety programs.

Backing & Low-Speed Maneuvering

A leading cause of apparatus damage and near-miss events. Covers spotter protocols, spatial awareness, and the cone course and on-the-road maneuvering exercises that build the muscle memory to prevent them.

Adverse Weather & Special Conditions

How to adjust speed, following distance, and decision-making in rain, snow, ice, and low-visibility conditions — where standard driving habits become dangerous for a vehicle the size and weight of fire apparatus.

Roadway Incident Scene Safety (New)

What operators need to know once they arrive. Covers secondary crash prevention and scene protection procedures, supported by a real court case analysis that underscores why scene safety discipline matters.
